5 Reasons Why We Need Agricultural Improvement in Nigeria.

*PRIORITISING AGRICULTURE AS A NATION IS A NECESSITY*

(PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE AS A FARMER)

At the face of shortage of food in the country, there is a need for Nigeria to take up the responsibility of investing and improving the agricultural system in the country

The inflation in the country has now risen to 34% and is still bent on soaring higher in the next couple of weeks. The prices of goods are taking a drastic turn due to subsidy removal that has affected a large part of the economy.

With the massive landscape in Nigeria, there is more to be done by the government and private sector concerning food supply in Nigeria.

Here are key aspects highlighting the necessity of robust agricultural practices in the country:

1. Food Security

Famine is often attributed to food shortage in the society. When the available resources are not enough for the population, then we can say there is food insecurity.

With the rising number of the population in Nigeria, creating means to expand organic farm produce is very important. The numbers of people into farming will help to create a balance in the purchase and demand for food.  This can help to tackle food insecurity and protect the National food barn.

2 Rural Development

Engaging rural areas through farm produce leads to development of the communities. Job creation and use of technological devices often improve the living conditions in rural areas. A huge amount of the money we make from the farm produce is used in improving the standard of living in rural settlements where we farm through Community Social Responsibility and our Government needs to do more in providing basic amenities to stop rising rural and urban migration.

3. Inadequate Security for Farmers

With the minimal involvement of technological farming tools, farmers are more physically engaged in the growing of their farm produce in Nigeria. However, the tragedy is that most are now victims of Kidnappers, Herdsmen, Bandits, and armed robbers who have ended their lives on their farmlands. We are a living witness. Most times, we paid for our own security to stay on the farm.

Most farmers have backed out from farming and abandoned their farms because of lack of security of their lives and properties.  The nation needs to do more in protecting farmers from banditry and kidnapping nationwide.

4. Increasing the Food Barn of the Nation

Preparation for the unknown future is a crucial strategy to tackle food insecurity. Storing agricultural farm produce for future use will create a sense of safety for the economy.

The larger the scope of production, the more we would have excesses that would be preserved for future use. To achieve this, the government must be intentional about large production and creation of space for food storage.

The easiest way is to empower farmers in rural and urban areas to be able to facilitate this strategy at local level.

5. Economic Growth and Diversification

The GDP of Nigeria has faced downwards for several years now. Production of food is a crucial aspect of the economy that can boost the economy and amplify good living.

Agricultural production leads to job creation for the citizens and increases the revenue for government and private organizations. Venturing into Agriculture helps to fight poverty and enhance a good standard of living.

Conclusion

Improving agricultural practices in Nigeria is essential for economic growth, food security, rural development, environmental sustainability, and overall societal well-being. Strategic investments in agriculture can transform the sector, making it more productive, sustainable, and capable of meeting the challenges of the future.
